Spatial PlanPeople, Places, Futures – The Wales Spatial Plan |
The Wales Spatial Plan is a 20-year plan, adopted by the Welsh Assembly Government in 2004, which sets out a framework to guide future sustainable development across Wales. Spatial planning is “the consideration of what can happen, and should happen, where”.
The Spatial Plan also provides a clear framework to enable collaborative working between the Welsh Assembly Government, its agencies, local authorities, the private and voluntary / third sectors to achieve the priorities set out at both a national and regional level. It enables different parts of Wales to establish their own distinctive approaches to meet the objectives of the Welsh Assembly’s Strategic Plan Wales: A Better Country, and the Sustainable Development Scheme.
Under the Spatial Plan, Wales is divided into six spatial areas. Swansea is located in the 'Swansea Bay – Waterfront and Western Valleys’ area, which encompasses Eastern Carmarthenshire, City & County of Swansea and Neath Port Talbot.
The Vision for Swansea Bay – Waterfront and Western Valleys is for "an area of planned sustainable growth and environmental improvement, realising its potential, supported by integrated transport within the area and externally, and spreading prosperity to support the revitalisation of West Wales"
Update - August 2008
The Wales Spatial Plan has now been updated following a period of consultation. The detailed operational work plan will be set out separately in delivery frameworks for each of the regions which will be published this autumn. These will also identify the mechanisms for delivery and the proposed indicators which will be used to measure progress, which will be monitored and recorded in an annual report, starting in 2009.
